I had thought I was getting an app that would have the same - superlative and extensive -information on words and the history of words as in the printed version I own.

No way! Given its cost, this app is almost a scam.

BUT: do get the Farlex Dictionary Pro. Its so much better, and even lets you download foreign language dictionaries for free.
